Who are the top hackers in the world right now?

The names at the top of this board are the people currently winning the global skill race on HackerDNA. Malekith leads with 24298 XP, saraivadigital is second with 20488, angelhuggy is third with 18446. Click any username in the leaderboard table below to see that hacker's solved labs, accepted writeups, country and rank history. The top of the global board is extremely competitive - a single hard lab solved or a writeup accepted is enough to move several positions, so the answer to "who is the #1 hacker in the world" changes week to week.

Live skill ranking vs historical "famous hackers" lists

Most lists you find for "top hackers in the world" or "famous ethical hackers" are historical: Kevin Mitnick, Adrian Lamo, Charlie Miller, Tsutomu Shimomura, HD Moore. They are not wrong - but they are static, and they reward fame more than current skill. HackerDNA's Hall of Fame is the opposite: a live, skill-based, XP-driven ranking that updates every single day from solved labs, accepted writeups and completed challenges. If a 19-year-old student in Karachi out-solves a senior pentester in California this week, the board reflects it tomorrow. There is no editorial committee and no nomination process - only XP.

How the XP system works

Every lab on HackerDNA awards XP scaled to its difficulty. Every writeup the community accepts adds a bonus on top of the solve (which is why top players publish writeups for almost everything - it roughly doubles their effective XP rate). Hands-on challenges and courses contribute their own XP. The Hall of Fame on this page is the cumulative all-time total. Monthly and weekly leaderboards reset on a calendar basis and are accessible from the navigation tabs at the top of the page. The all-time board you are looking at is the most competitive of the three, because it stacks years of consistent work.

What it takes to break into the global top 10

The current #10 score gives you a real benchmark for how steep the curve is at the top of the global board. Players who reach the global top 10 share three habits: they specialise in one or two categories (web exploitation, reversing, pwn, crypto) and go deep before diversifying; they publish writeups for almost every lab they solve; and they show up consistently - nobody has made it to the global top 10 in a single weekend. Expect several months of solving two to five labs per week plus writeups as a realistic path.

How to start climbing

Sign up for HackerDNA, set your country on your profile, and pick web exploitation as your first category - it has the most labs and the gentlest difficulty curve. Solve consistently. Publish a writeup on every lab you finish. New solves propagate to the leaderboard below on the next daily snapshot. Use the country and university leaderboards (linked from the navigation tabs) to find peers and mentors in your region.
